Air India has disclosed that it has integrated Apple AirTags into its baggage tracking system, enabling Apple users to track their luggage with iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. This feature is being introduced to assist passengers in locating their bags if they get lost due to system-wide technical issues or other factors.
Each year, the airline transports over 100 million pieces of baggage with a 99.6% delivery rate on time, and together with the owner. However, for the remaining small percentage of bags that are ultimately delayed due to the airport baggage system being jammed or offline, flight misconnections, and other reasons, the company stated in a news release that their integration of Apple AirTags will assist in tracking delayed luggage, which needs to be retrieved as soon as possible.
When passengers input their flight information into the Air India app “My Trips” feature section, Air India will automatically show their bag status at check-in before using the app or the Air India website. They can also track their bag status with the baggage receipt barcode that the airline provides to the passenger to track the bag, with the AirTag feature as well.
Air India claims to be the first airline in Asia to offer this integrated baggage tracking feature.
“At Air India, we are constantly innovating and enhancing our digital capabilities to improve the customer experience. As we work towards becoming a world-class global airline, we are excited to offer this innovative solution to help passengers track their baggage if it doesn't arrive on time. We are confident that this feature, which uses Apple’s AirTag and Share Item Location feature in conjunction with our real-time tracking system, will be extremely helpful to our guests,” said Dr. Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital & Technology Officer, Air India.
To access this new feature, users need Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later.
